Mary Hart and Philip Wilheit: Lakeside Charm
BY Pamela A. Keene

As a youngster, Mary Hart Wilheit had her very own playhouse, but she's the first to admit that she lost interest in the miniature backyard retreat as she grew older. "It was small and crowded inside," she says. "And because it was in my own back yard, I took it for granted."

However, when her grandchildren were born, it was the perfect opportunity to build a new playhouse-this one a three-story version that can accommodate children and adults. The gray cottage has bright, blue shutters adorned with cut-out hearts, a shake roof and an arbor. The quaint playhouse sets the tone for the back yard of the Wilheit home, which is filled with lush green gardens, a pond, waterfall, stately pavilion and plenty of room for relaxing or entertaining.

"I have always loved to entertain, and I've worked in the yard for years," she says. "I just love flowers and the outdoors."

Philip and Mary Hart built the home on Lake Lanier 31 years ago, calling on builders Dale and Wayne Clark. Over the years, Dale Clark has continued to work with them, adding on rooms, remodeling and enclosing porches. Their children, Mary Hart and Philip "Phip" Arthur Jr., were raised there, and the house changed as their family grew up.
