Fall 2005 Red Hatters Embrace Age BY Laureen Lessard Dressed in purple and red with a saucy plumed hat, she is a lovely caricature of Victorian-era eccentricity. Ninety-year-old Lillian Berkowsky is far from aged and stuffy as she sips a tall, cool beverage and exchanges giggles with girlfriends at the Autumn Breeze Assisted Living and the Gainesville-Hall County Senior Center. Underneath all the frivolity, these ladies adorned in breathtaking red and purple share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes them next. Berkowsky, a charter member of the Gainesville Girls, a Hall County chapter of the Red Hat Society, routinely socializes with her 35 closest friends at High Teas and other red hatter events. "We are all like sisters when we get together, and it means so much to know that we will never be alone, because we have each other. Everyone is just so nice," she beams.
